Results Are In

FINALLY!!! After:

  1. Worrying about how I'd manage the application with my new work/living situation
  2. Worrying about how to pay for all of the things I would be spending on
  3. Worrying about not being able to refund any of the things I had already spent money on
  4. Booking an interview (and figuring out if I'd get all my papers done in time)
  5. Going through the process of getting all of my papers together
  6. Dealing with my nerves as I applied at one embassy, only to be told to apply at another embassy
  7. Getting all my paper together AGAIN for a new embassy, and booking another interview (ie: repeat steps 4 onwards)
  8. Being questioned at the new embassy why i was applying there and not the other embassy
  9. Harassing people for documents and prayers
  10. Waiting for the results of my application

I finally, FINALLY have my freaking VISA!!!!!

*cartwheel*cartwheel*cartwheel*cartwheel*cartwheel*

I'd like to b*tch about my passport and whine about how needing a visa to almost anywhere else in the world simply because I'm Filipino is beyond irritating - but I'm too happy to complain.

A group of us have been planning this trip for at least a year now - purchasing tickets, planning itineraries, booking and reserving flights and accommodations.  With everything that's happened in my life from then till now, I had absolutely no idea if I'd still be able to go on this trip - but pushed forward anyway, feeling confident that it WOULD work out. Admittedly, at one point, I almost did give up. Thankfully I didn't. And thankfully, the support from the people involved has been amazing.

It's a little photo finish - finally getting a go-signal for a trip you've been planning for a while, a week before you actually need to leave? But a go-signal now is better than a no-go-signal!

Few more things to sort out before I leave, but thankfully, the biggest thing I had to sort out, has been sorted!

And in celebration of my joy, sharing a few of the gazillion pictures I took, from the some of the places I got to visit last time I was in Europe.

Paris, France

Mt. San Michel, France

Honfleur, France

San Sebastian, Spain

Bilbao, Spain

Granada, Spain

Normandy, France

Cordoba, Spain

Barcelona, Spain

In Other News...

I just realized when texting with a friend that in the last round of payments I made this morning,  I FINISHED PAYING OFF MY SECOND PHASE DEBT.

Oh happy day!

I have a last and final round of debt to take care of. While the debt pseudo exists (ie: it's so in the past that I think my lender has already called it even), I think it would be nice if I paid it. I think my lender will be pleasantly surprised with me too.

Now.. where do I fit it in? Before the two big purchases I want to do between now and the end of next year? In between or after? Hmm..

This.. ehm.. situation I've had with my finances over the last so many years has gotten me so crazy about my finances that I watch everything like a hawk now. I spend when I want to spend but everything is budgeted, tracked and accounted for. I guess that's a good thing huh? Not that I want to admit it but I do get a bit of a nerdish thrill when I open up my excel document to account for and study my finances. Hee.

Visita Igelsia 2010

The tradition of Visita Iglesia, or church visits, is a Holy Thursday practice that began in Rome, where pilgrims would visit 7 churches as penance for their sin and in preparation for Easter.

On a whim, two friends and I thought to give it a go for the first time this year. Admittedly, our main reason was more to experience the tradition as an observer (ie. take pictures), but in our defense, while we may not have done a novena / Stations of the Cross at each church, we did spend a few minutes in prayer and reflection.

First church we checked out was St. Jude Thaddeus Archdioscesan Shrine in the MalacaƱang Compound in Mendiola, Manila. It was my first time here, so I made a wish as I explored the grounds.

St Jude is the Patron Saint of desperate cases and lost causes. Having a few "feeling lost and desperate, but still hoping" causes tucked at the back of my mind, I offered candle and a prayer. Thinking about it now, perhaps I should've offered a whole bucket of candles :|

Church number two was the Minor Basilica of San Lorenzo Ruiz, or the Binondo Church, in Chinatown. It's a pretty old church, having been constructed in 1596. Unfortunately, the bell tower is all that remains of the original edifice. Like many of our churches, much has been lost to war and natural calamities. You can't see it in my photos (you can google it, lol, or if you're an FB friend, dig through my photos to see an example), but I really like how the bell tower looks like a pagoda; a great reflection of the Chinese influence on the church due to the community it resides in.

I used to do a lot of errands in Chinatown, and would always drive by this Church. Don't know why I never though to go inside. The church by the way is HUGE inside! Glad to have finally gotten around to checking it out.

Church number 3 was the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, or the Manila Cathedral. Built in the 16th century, formerly of nipa & bamboo, the Cathedral is on its 6th reincarnation.

Last time I was here was when I had the honor of singing for the funeral mass of late President Aquino. Before that was to sing for Ateneo's Sesqui kick of event. One of many perks of singing in choir, you get to frequent beautiful places like this. What was nice this time around was that I had an opportunity to meander around the grounds, as opposed to simply being "stuck" in the choir section of the church. Lol. I really love the intricacy of the grand stone doorways of the Cathedral, and have always loved cathedral arches. They're so purty :)

Church number 4 was San Agustin in Intramuros, Manila. It's a World Heritage Site, one of UNESCO's (hello dream employer) four listed baroque churches in the Philippines. Hate the peach walls, but I love the baroque details (ie: the intricately carved wooden doors) and the crazy details inside the church (the blue & white chandeliers & the tromp l'eoil embellishments).

Aside from having sung a number of times in this church in the past, I explored it some more a few years back when I went on a walking tour with Ivan Man Dy of Old Manila Walks fame. Primarily interested in the general aesthetic of things, I gotta admit, that you do gain a different level of appreciation when you understand the history behind what you're visually enjoying.

Church number 5 was Our Lady of Remedies, or the Malate Church in Manila. Originally built in the 16th century, this church has a baroque facade. Kind of looks like a smaller, plainer Binondo church up front actually. The inside though looks nothing like the outside - very small and quite simple.

This was another one of those churches I've happened to drive by often (think high school gimiks out in Gotham & Cafe Havana, etc, etc, lol) but have never had the opportunity to explore.

Being a newbie at Visita Iglesia, I didn't count on the scorching summer heat to speedily drain our energies. This most probably explains our choices for churches 6 & 7. Both were modern and convenient churches to reach - simple churches in form but lovely churches none the less. These were, the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart, in Makati

And the St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Ortigas.

It was a great day to say the least. Religion is so closely tied up with the Philippine persona that experiencing Visita Iglesia really touched me a number of levels.

Definitely looking forward to doing this again next year!

Midnight Snack

Pictured above is a yummy grilled mashed banana & peanut butter sandwich my sister grilled (in butter! eep!) for me recently as a midnight snack. Yum :)

(kippy hungry for a midnight snack too.. then again.. kippy's always hungry for a snack)

I know you aren't supposed to eat 3 hours before going to sleep, but midnight snacks are such a staple! Whether it be with family, friends, or even by yourself, who doesn't like scrounging around the ref for some ingredients to rustle up into something comforting to the tummy and soul?

First memory I have of a midnight snack was during the summers we'd spend in the Philippines with my grandparents. My lola and I would have toasted bread with butter and liver spread with some Milo & Nido to smack on as a "beverage".

There are too many favorite comfort midnight snack foods to even begin to list here.. top of mind though? Hmmm....
  • Grilled cheese sandwich (variations include small grilled cheese & garlic sandwich, grilled ham & cheese sandwich)
  • Indomie's Supermie (Indonesian instant noodles. The freaking BOMB. Grew up eating this as an after school snack along with a cheese omelet)
  • Hot chocolate (Nestle's Quik, Milo, Swiss Miss, Tablea.. or our own concoction of milk, sugar, cinnamon and cocoa powder)
  • Glass of milk and whatever cold cake fortunate enough to have lasted its first day in our household
Fellow foodies, what's yours?

2009: A Review (Part II)

2009 was also a year of growth.

Worked on my health;
celebrated 1 year of being cigarette free,

gave up sweets for 1/2 the year,

.. and started getting exercise whenever and wherever i could.

Fed my soul through long time staples such as art & giving back;
took photos like a madwoman of random beautiful & interesting
things i wanted to remember & share;

went back to the theater and did a few shows plus saw a lot of great productions;

did my share of getting my hands creating...

... and of course music! (picture taken from A.Salazar FB album)

(renovate to educate dec 09)

(tree planting @ intramuros jan 09)

(volunteer work for ondoy oct/nov 09)

A lot of random but significant things also happened in 2009;

changed careers...

sang for cory aquino's final mass (manila) & memorial mass (boston)...

watched friends make life-long commitments...

and was even the maid of honor at a wedding!

And how can I close 2009 without mentioning the greatest blessings in my life? My friends and my family.

With the usual suspects such as my friends from my current choir,

and kiddie friends from my old choir.

I visited friends I grew up with in Jakarta

and in Manila,

and was visited by many who came back to visit!

And as much as they drive me crazy, I spent a lot of
time with my family; most especially my
beautiful, twin tower sisters.

So with that, I officially close my 2009 and dive headfirst into my 2010, excited, open and ready to take it on.

I plan on having a fabulously amazing year. Can't wait!

Random Love

In a time where everyone is so busy running around and stressing and being productive, sometimes one of the best things in the world is to sleep in and wake up to a whole day of nothingness ahead.

Bliss I tell you, bliss.

these are a few of my favorite things..

i LOVE things like ribbons, and paper, and wrapping and all sorts of cute little "useless" things. i remember going to Michael's for the first time years ago and wanting to stay there the whole day. i can spend hours randomly fishing through shelves filled with all sorts of random pretty crap.

my future home is definitely going to have a room devoted to wrapping and gifts and craft stuff.

on top of all of that, i love pretty things arranged so you see the collection of color? love love love. bottle of jelly beans, or glass containers with sorted m&ms, or bowls of buttons! love!

facebook words of wisdom

i saw this on my facebook updates, thot it was rather apt as this (among another things) is what i have actively and consciously chosen to focus on this year.

this is from the application "what God wants us to know":

YOU CAN USE ANY EXCUSE TO BE HAPPY -
You know how sometimes it seems that life is just throwing you one curved ball after another? Well, guess what, - you have a great way to respond! - you can use any excuse, any at all to be happy. Don't just soap your body in the shower - caress it and receive pleasure from touching and being touched. Don't just walk on the street - enjoy the fragrances of the trees and the flowers on your way. Don't just drive your car - sing karaoke to your favorite radio station.

o diba? simple serendipity ;)

have a break, have a flavored kit kat

my sister's only request from a recent trip i took was green tea kit kat, as she read somewhere this was available in japan. to my surprise, kit kat was available in more flavors than i imagined! i came home with: green tea, strawberry, blueberry cheesecake, apple, lemon, candied sweet potato and what i assume to be some sort of japanese bean? soy sauce i thought was a little TOO strange so i opted to snap me a picture of it.

i did a quick search online and it turns out, kit kat comes in even MORE flavors! outside of the usual chocolatey combinations (hazlenut, cafe late, dark, mint), here are some of the more.. ehm.. interesting flavors:
  • kit kat edamame
  • kit kat ice tea
  • kit kat carb alternative
  • kit kat grilled corn
  • kit kat cherry blossom
  • kit kat watermelon & salt
plus some that sound super yummy:
  • kit kat cookie dough
  • kit kat honey comb
  • kit kat kiwifruit
  • kit kat japanese roasted tea
i've always found variations of "regular" items incredibly amusing.. different colored m&m's, different flavored kisses, the extra large pocky sticks we found in japan, as well as the minuture bottles of japanese mayo. the kit kat though was a bit more of a happy surprise, as i really had no idea they had such varied flavors!

check out this link for a more detailed list of the available kit kat flavors out there:

while waiting for an appointment in the freak cool air of manila, i ran into these two cuties. i had to capture it on camera.

i stalked them for a while but could not get a great shot. eventually, i asked their "person" if i could take a quick snapshot of the two.
